A Warm reception

Posted on Fri May 24th, 2019 @ 11:39am by Commander James Tyson Sr. & Lieutenant Commander Andrea Sumner

Mission: Wounded Pride
Location: Ready Room
Timeline: Pre MD

It had been nearly a full week and half since Edward had been assigned to the Sutherland, and during all that time he had been overseeing the last of the ships major refit. He also was greeting his Senior Staff, and having meetings with Starfleet Intelligence and Operations and the docking master. Even his wife came aboard for a couple of days to bring him much needed comfort. Truthfully Edward knew that his wife missed him being next to her and he did to, and for a moment when he was sleeping with his wife he almost wanted her to join him aboard the ship; however she made a promise that when she retired from Starfleet she would remain planetside. Edward arrived on the bridge and he quickly glanced at the center chair, he hadn't gotten a chance to sit in it yet; he made a promise that he would sit in it when it was the day for them to launch. "If anyone needs me I'll be in my ready room," he said as he continued along the wall and entered into his private space. He gave a slight stretch and walked over to the replicator and made himself a fresh pot of Lady Grey tea with cream on the side, and took it to his desk and proceeded to pull up the latest reports.

Andrea walked up and hit the door the chime on the office and waited for the Commander's response. She had only arrived a few days early but her duties had precluded her from reporting in directly with the Captain.

"Come in," replied Edward as he poured himself a cup of fresh tea and a little milk. It was early in the morning for the Sutherland, and the view of Africa was just appearing on the edge of his ready room window. He glanced over at the fish tank in the corner and he just shook his head as he looked at the fish just floating there; he was going to make a mental note to have a full salt-water fish tank that went from the floor to the ceiling in his ready room.

Andrea walked into the Captain's Office and came to attention. "Lieutenant Commander Andrea Sumner reporting sir." She said strongly.

"At ease Commander," he said as he took a sip of tea that was at his desk for a brief minute and then stood up with his hand extended. "Welcome aboard the Sutherland," he added. "I normally address my senior staff by their first names, however if you want to be called Commander Sumner or Number One; that's quite alright with me."

"Whatever works for you Commander." Andrea said as she relaxed albeit. "It is your ship after all."

"This is true Andrea," he replied as he sat back down in his chair and motioned for her to take the seat directly in front of him. "Please have a seat, and help yourself to a cup of tea if you so desire," he said as he pushed the tea pot and milk and sugar towards her direction along with an empty tea cup. "I was just reading your file the other day Andrea and it is quite impressive. Normally people who take the command test just want it for the rank that comes with it, and when Starfleet Command recommended you for the position I figured I would give you that interview. So tell me a little bit about yourself, and what do you see yourself doing in the role of an XO?"

Andrea smiled and gave her new CO a slight head nod. "Not sure honestly, I figure I have a lot to learn, and learning I have been doing on me career." She said as she sat down. "I didn't have a fourth year or standard Cadet Cruise, I was rushed to the fleet during the War with the Dominion. And I don't need to tell you that was a real baptism by fire. So in a way I have spent my career trying to be an explorer not a warrior, to do my best that another war like that doesn't happen." She said simply.

"Oh I understand exactly how you feel Andrea," he said as he took another sip of tea. "I was promoted to command the Repulse in 2353, right in the heat of the Cardassian Federation War, for a seven year period I was involved in 47 separate engagements with the Cardassians. Then when I was given Command of the Independence I spent four years along the Cardassian border, and then after that I was sent on exploration missions for eight years." Edward looked at the mini model of the Ambassador Class ship plastered on his wall. "As far as the Dominion War goes I've seen it all from start to beginning, and war isn't as glamours as many people who have never experienced it make it. Command has a huge learning curve to it, but once you find out what works for you specifically and you learn your own style...you will be just fine."

"Thank you sir." Andrea nodded. "Is there anything I can do to help you while we are getting ready for orders?"

"We need to make sure that all the supplies we are taking on for Starbase 214 is being coordinated correctly, also keep in touch with our new Chief Engineer on the refit. Other than that Commander I don't see anything else that we could need," Edward said as he thought for a bit about what they could need. "Do you have any questions for me?"

"No sir, I think we shall get along famously." Andrea said with a smile and a nod.

"As do I," he said as he stood up and extended his hand towards her. "I'm glad to have you aboard Andrea, and welcome aboard the Sutherland."

"Thank you sir." Andrea nodded as she turned to leave the Ready Room. She paused for a second and looked around the room. "I feel like we will be making some history here."

"As do I," he said as he felt reassured deep down within himself that he made the right choice for his XO. In time she would find herself and her footing, and possibly her command style as well, but that takes a little more time to figure out.
